Genevieve (c. 419/422 AD – 502/512 AD) is the patroness saint of Paris in the Roman Catholic and Orthodox traditions. Her feast is on 3 January.
In Christian art, Saint Genevieve is represented holding a lighted candle. Legend says that as a young girl, Genevieve loved to pray in church alone at night. One day a gust of wind blew out her candle, leaving her in the dark. Genevieve merely concluded that the devil was trying to frighten her. For this reason she is often depicted holding a candle.
Another attribute of Saint Genevieve is a boat, the traditional icon of the city of Paris. She is portrayed with a view of the Seine River behind her back to symbolize that she watches over the city of Paris which she protects from potential invaders.
The modernist design of the medal accentuated with dramatic dark patina makes this medal a striking work of art. The medal is signed 'PY,' (for Fernand Py, 1887-1949) at bottom right panel. Reverse is blank
The circular medal is cast in silver plated bronze. Medal's diameter is 2 1/4 inches. I am unsure if the medal came with a hinged bail.
