Huipils from Chichicastenango are known to have some of the finest and most elaborate embroidery work. This piece is a spectacular example of intricate Mayan design. The embroidery is done entirely by hand in a fantastic array of vibrant colors. Three panels are used to make this huipil, meaning three separate weaves and three separate panels of embroidery.
A huipil of this quality can take many months to hand weave on a back strap loom. The back strap loom is a small hand loom used to make one slim weave at a time. The resulting fabrics, known as panels, are usually only 8"- 16" wide. 2-3 panels are joined together lengthways to create the base of a huipil. The fact that this garment is made using a back strap loom and is also made with a very fine weave of cotton results in the garment lasting for generations and the quality never fading. The outcome of years of experience is this truly beautiful yet sturdy masterpiece of weaving.

All items in my store are pre loved and can be up to 60 years old. Do not expect brand new and perfect.
These items of clothing have been worn for many years, sometimes by several generations of the same Mayan family, and could show some signs of wear. Sun fading, light soiling, thread pulls and fabric stretching are all possible. These should not be seen as imperfections, rather testaments to the long and varied history of the piece. However, any serious signs of damage such as holes or tears are always noted and photographed.
All Huipiles are 100% Cotton ( Excluding any metallic threads which are sometimes woven into the fabric )
Cortes occasionally have a mix to fibres to give them added strength and durability for their use as skirts

SHIPPING COSTS
Please note that shipping costs are not inflated.
It is expensive to ship from here in Guatemala. The first pound of weight costs $27 USD , it then gets progressively cheaper per pound
Some sellers offer free or reduced shipping simply by inflating the cost of the item being shipped. I do not.
I believe in offering beautiful, vintage pieces at the cheapest rate possible, whilst paying the ladies selling them, a good and fair price.
I hotsell strongly believe in fair trade practices and when traveling to many of the isolated villages, my friend Ingrid Aracely Pocon , who is Cackchiquel Mayan travels with me, to interact with the ladies selling their garments in their native tongues ensuring a fair price.
Quite often it is possible to ship more than one item for the lowest price from the shipping company. Please ask and I will be happy to help
PLEASE NOTE:
Government permit
All vintage items require a government permit before they can be shipped from Guatemala, to ensure they do not have historical significance. This process can take up to 10 business days, hence delivery time of 21 days. As soon as the permit is issued, the item/items will be released to UPS and a tracking number provided, delivery will then be within 3 days
