"Flame"
Here I have a hand inlaid wood mosaic. Curly Cherry has been inlaid in the form of a single hotsell flame with various exotic and domestic woods in the traditional mosaic way to create flow within the fire.
The project begins with a unique piece of wood where I find a path within it to exploit its character. I do this by sketching with the grain and around knots and cracks to strike a balance that works for the individual piece. The drawings are routed 3/8" deep into the wood, then the fun begins by selecting tiny individually cut wood triangles of various species to create mosaic patterns within the recessed area. The voids are filled with epoxy mixed with rosewood dust. I use Caribbean Rosewood dust because it is dark without being black, and warm toned yet neutral.
Small enough to be displayed anywhere, but thin enough to go where other items won't fit.
Hung by a standard picture hanger but has been raised out from the wall 3/4" to give a natural drop shadow framing.
