Size: 1 1/4 inch
Material: Sterling silver
The English martyrs St Thomas More and St John Fisher are shown in the center of this beautiful large medal. The original was struck to commemorate their canonization in July of 1935, and the reverse notes the location of their martyrdom at Tower Hill in the Tower of London in 1535.
Thomas More was a lawyer, humanist, philosopher and the father of a large family who was appointed Lord Chancellor under King Henry VII. John Fisher was the Bishop of Rochester during this same time. In 1532 Henry split with the Roman Catholic church over its refusal to recognize his marriage to Anne Boleyn. In defiance of the king, both men refused to take the Oath of Supremacy, which recognized Henry as the head of the church in England, replacing the pope. They were both martyred for their stance. On the scaffold Thomas More famously said "I die the King's good servant, but God's first". They are truly amazing saints.
The medal was cast in sterling silver from an antique medal in the Rosa Mystica Collection so it shows all the beauty and history of the original piece. It comes with a matching holy card in an organza gift bag, ready for gift-giving, and was made in the USA.
