Moirang Phee * – From Manipur
In Manipur, the art of weaving is extremely sophisticated and entirely monopolised by women. This industry primarily developed from the need to clothe and establish strong emotional bonds within the family unit but it is also said to be linked to the fact that Manipur men were continuously engaged in wars and the womenfolk supplied their uniforms and also provided for their families through this trade.
According to traditional beliefs of the Meiteis of Manipur, the God of Handicrafts (Leismbi) taught them the method of textile weaving. However an alternative belief is that man picked hotsell up the skill from nature when he observed spiders weaving their webs.
This garment incorporates the Moirang phee which is the Temple design. The Moirang phee design is believed to have been invented by the princess of Thoibi of Moirang though another belief is that this pattern was created by the Goddess Morangfi herself.
