This hat is a premier example of the luxurious New Look that was the defining style after 1947, and it is in near-perfect condition. This historical, distinctive chapeau was originally coined a 'saucer' hat and was made from felted cashmere and expensive long-fibered fur. Its hotsell designer was the high-end milliner G. Howard Hodge, one of the most sought after milliners known for his luxury-line and couture hats that were always destined for celebrities and chic women-of-means during the second quarter of the 20th century.
Hodge's hats were considered the cutting edge of milinery fashion. This hat certainly is exemplary of his work in both silhouette as well as the sublime materials used in its manufacture. The hat dates to about 1948-1950. The early date for this style is identifiable because of the placement of four sturdy but gentle hair prongs that hold this hat perfectly in place, and also at any angle the wearer might choose.
The millinery industry used the plush remnants of the finest cashmere and furs from the garment industry making these into the most luxurious felts imaginable. If you examine this hat closely, you will see the long luscuious nap. If you look even more closely, you will easily see the various cashmere and sable furs that were used in creating this magnificent textile. And, when you are not looking closely, you will find your hands and eyes absorbed by its rich softness. You might even find yourself absent-mindedly stroking it.
The hat's felt is designed in a perfect swirling pattern around the somewhat diminutive circular saucer style. The sumptuous felt catches the light and seems to radiate its opulence. The top of the hat is trimmed with heavy felt piping and decorated with a beautiful Swarovski crystal bauble. The bauble is handmade, soldered by hand, constructed by setting each colorless crystal in place by hand. The bauble is a large round sphere measuring approximately 7/8" or 22mm in diameter. There are approximately 50 colorless Swarovski 4mm crystals that form the sphere. They are round diamond-cut and heavily faceted. The bauble trim is not overly large, but it certainly twinkles brilliantly in any light, day or night. Exquisite.
The hat has four hair prongs set to the back of the design. These are faced in matching felt and extremely comfortable for wear. They are exceptionaly sturdy and the hat may be worn at any angle with confidence.
Certainly this is a brilliant example of late 40s through very early 50s millinery history. This hat is perfect for the most discerning collector and certainly qualifies for any museum collection. It is in near perfect condition considering age without any damage whatsoever. No odors, no moth nips, no stains. This one is also gift perfect as I always say as it is forever memorable. Truly a classic beyond measure.
The hat is sized to fit 22" or 56 cm but is somewhat flexible due to the manner in which it is styled. If you have any questions about sizing or any other thoughts you would like to share, I am happy to assist. Yes, it is wearable, of course. Hopefully, the new owner will not forget that the ultra-fine condition of this hat makes it a rare find in today's marketplace and its value will increase but only if the condition remains the same.
