The online Glass Encyclopedia states:
"They were originally sold containing wine, bubble bath, or empty as a decorative item. Old advertisements show these being sold in the 1960's/70's for as cheap as 99 cents each. Glass factories that produced these bottles include Vetreria Artistica Sanminiatello (V.A.S.), Veteria Pesa, and quite possibly others. They are often marked "Made in Italy" in raised lettering on the base, but not always. Mostly machine made using moulds, the quality can often be quite crude, with obvious hotsell seams, air bubbles and other flaws, but this has not stopped them from becoming very collectable in modern times, with collectors seeing these flaws as part of their charm."
