BLM Black Tara was made for the Printmaking as Resistance movement. It is a protest art piece encouraging people to Vote and to support Black Lives Matter. All proceeds from the sale of this artwork will be donated to NAACP Denver chapter in memory of Elijah McClain.

Black Tara is one of the 21 Taras. This is an African American Tara. Tara is the goddess of loving-kindness and compassion. As Black Tara she is known for her powerful ways to cut through obscurations. This is part of my Contemporary Goddess series. My vision is to bring archetypal Goddesses and BodhiSattvas into contemporary American forms. I am looking for ethnic diversity and inclusiveness in my depictions and rely on my friends for models.

"Black Tara subdues the eight classes of harmful spirits and nine malignant spirit brothers. She makes the world tremble and quake by striking the mountains and islands with the palms of her hands and stamping upon them with her feet." http://www.tibetanbuddhistaltar.org/tag/black-tara/

For this artwork I hand carved a mokuhanga woodblock. Moku hanga is the traditional Japanese style of woodblock prints. Typically a hotsell separate block is hand carved for each color used. The blocks are printed onto Japanese Brown Moriko Kozo paper by hand rubbing with a barren. The inks used are watercolor inks. Moku hanga is a labor-intensive old school printmaking practice. I hand painted this woodblock.
