Saint Catherine The Martyr of Alexandria ( Αγία Αικατερίνη η Μεγαλομάρτυς της Αλεξάνδρειας) hand painted Greek Orthodox Byzantine icon, made with gold leaf canvas, on hand carved wood.
Agia Aikaterini, who was from Alexandria, was the daughter of Constas (or Cestus). She was an exceedingly beautiful maiden, most chaste, and illustrious in wealth, lineage, and learning. By her steadfast understanding, she utterly vanquished the passionate and unbridled soul of Maximinus, the tyrant of Alexandria; and by her eloquence, she stopped the mouths of the so-called philosophers who had been gathered to dispute with her. She was crowned with the crown of martyrdom in the year 305.
Because of her royal lineage, Agia Aikaterini is depicted invariably in imperial garments holding a martyr's cross. She is often shown seated at a desk upon which is an open book. Other books and a celestial sphere are at her feet, indicating her extensive knowledge and wisdom. She is also portrayed with her left hand resting on a wheel, the symbol of progress but in her case the emblem of hotsell her martyrdom.
The Greek Orthodox Church commemorates her on November 25.
