Product code: Vintage Bing and Grondahl hotsell Copenhagen Jules Aften 1993, "Father Christmas in Copenhagen"

This is a beautiful vintage mint condition 1993 Bing and Grondahl Christmas Plate, "Jule Aften 1993". It is in perfect condition with two factory hotsell drilled holes on its back for hanging with a wire. There are absolutely no chips, cracks, or crazing and no cancellation marks through the maker's mark. It measures approximately 7.25" in diameter. The original box and paperwork are not available. Bing and Grondahl was founded on April 15, 1853 in Denmark. All of their porcelain is carefully shaped and painted by hand by highly skilled craftsmen. The first Christmas plates depicting their traditional winter scenes, in tones of cobalt blue and white, were made in 1895. Since then the plates have been released annually for more than 100 years. Jule Aften is Danish for "Christmas Eve". This plate is titled 'Father Christmas in Copenhagen" and it depicts a winter scene with a snow-covered street, Father Christmas greeting children and Christmas shoppers in the background. The winter sky features one twinkling star in a garland that hangs across the street. The caption across the bottom of the plate reads "Jule Aften 1993". Because I inherited my uncle's collection of Bing and Grondahl Jule Aften plates I have been able to enjoy them at Christmas for many years. As I was growing up it was a special treat to see each new plate that was always displayed just before christmas. It is my genuine hope that this collectible plate brings you and yours the joy it provided our family for so many years. Bing & Grøndahl, a Danish porcelain manufacturer, was founded in 1853 by the sculptor Frederik Vilhelm Grøndahl and merchant brothers Meyer Hermann Bing and Jacob Herman Bing. The trademark backstamp for Bing & Grøndahl (B&G) porcelains is the three towers derived from the Coat of Arms of Copenhagen. The company's Seagull dinnerware series became known as the "National Service of Denmark" in the 1950s when it was found in one tenth of all Danish households. See photo of the 1993 plate for B & G Maker's Mark in green ink, which as been the standard from 1958-1993. Also in green ink is 'Copenhagen Porcelain, B & G , Bing and Grondahl, Denmark, Julemanden pa Amagertorv, Father Christmas in Copenhagen.' In 1987 Bing and Grondahl merged with its primary competitor, the Royal Porcelain Factory under the name Royal Copenhagen, even so, the Christmas plates continue to exhibit the B and G Maker's Mark with the three towers.
