As one of the intangible cultural heritages in Beijing region, Tu'er Ye (The Rabbit Lord; 兔爺), is a deity of Chinese folk religion unique to Beijing and is always depicted in clay figures having the head of rabbit and the body of human being. He is related with moon worship, as he is considered the moon rabbit of the goddess Chang'e(嫦娥). Legend goes that there was an epidemic in North China long ago, and doctors could not do anything about it. So the Moon Goddess Chang'e sent her rabbit to earth to treat the disease. Historical records show it first appeared at the beginning of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and thrived in the middle of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Almost all households, the royal family and common citizens alike, were offered sacrifice to the Rabbit Lord during the Mid-autumn Festival.
