Chang'e

Chang'e is the Chinese goddess of the Moon.

There are many tales about Chang'e. Chang'e was a beautiful woman. Ten suns had risen together into the skies and scorched the Earth, thus causing hardship for the people. Houyi the archer, who was married to Chang'e, shot down nine of them, leaving just one Sun, and was given by the emperor either two or one with enough for two elixirs of immortality as a reward. He did not consume it straight away, but let Chang'e keep it with her, as he did not want to gain immortality without his beloved wife. However Chang'e took the elixir and flew upward past the heavens, crying for help. Houyi saw her wife but could not reach her. She landed on the the Moon and chose it as her residence. Houyi took the remaining elixir and chose the sun as his residence. Once every a month he visits his wife and that is when we have full moon.
