It's very hard to find a Schilling tin from the WWII era that's actually marked "Wartime Substitute." This can is patented, dated and numbered.
Due to shortages and rationing, companies appealed to customers' sense of civic duty, as mothers and grandmothers tried to create a sense of normalcy, baking family favorites and keeping traditions alive.
This tin still contains ground imitation cinnamon, including cinnamon "aldehyde," along with other artificial flavors, and ground almond shells.
The label, top and bottom are in very good condition. The left-hand side with the seam is bowed a bit.
