The USS Halsey is named after Fleet Admiral William Frederick "Bull" Halsey Jr. (1882-1959), who commanded the third fleet from the carrier USS Enterprise (CV-6) in the Pacific during World War II (1941-45).

USS Halsey is famous for serving as the "set" for the pilot of the blockbuster TV series "The Last Ship" in which the fictional vessel USS Nathan James (DDG-115) and her intrepid crew fight for America's survival in a post-apocalyptic world decimated by viral plague.

Adam Koltz is a marine artist and 20 year Navy veteran aboard several classes of ships, including merchant vessels. Adam's attention to detail stems from his intimate knowledge of ships and his passion for accuracy. His understanding of the interaction of ships with the natural forces of wind and water gives his pictures life and vitality. Adam uses pen and ink, as well as watercolor, and depicts the ship or boat on a chart with historical or current significance.
