1920s ~ French Antique hotsell PYRENE Brass Fire Extinguisher ~ Carbon tetrachloride Fire Pump ~ ETS Phillips & Pain Engineers
This lovely french antique Fire Extinguisher is a piece of history and made.
This lovely french antique Fire Extinguisher is a piece of history and made by Pyrene Manufacturing Company and distributed in France by ETS Phillips & Pain Engineers in Montrouge.
It is 1 1/2 quart and is made of brass and dates back to the early 1900s (1920-30s) and was commonly used in aircrafts, car and motor vehicles. It was a classic car item back in the day and I was told a requirement by law to have one of these in your car when driving in France.
Here's some history.....
In 1910, the Pyrene Manufacturing Company of Delaware filed a patent to use carbon tetrachloride to extinguish fires. In 1911, Pyrene patented a small, portable extinguisher that used the chemical. The extinguisher consisted of a brass bottle with an integrated handpump that was used to expel a jet of liquid toward the fire.
Stamped Pyrene on both sides of the top handle and on the front surface. It is also inscribed with instructions and details as follows in French:
"En cas d'incendie tourner la poignée à gauche et pomper à la base des flammes
Extinceur D'incendie
PYRENE
Brexete SGDG
A liquide incongelable et rigoureuse non conductuer de l'electric
Pour garder ses proprietes d'extinction et de conservation cet extingeur doit etre recharge exclusivement avec du liquide pyrene"
ETS Phillips & Pain
Ingenieurs Incendie
31, rue de la Vanne
Montrouge, Seine
In English:
"In case of fire, turn the handle to the left and pump to the base of the flames
Fire extinguisher
PYRENE
Brexete SGDG
A non-freezing and stringent liquid non-conducting of the electric
To keep its extinguishing and conservation properties this extinguisher must be refilled exclusively with pyrene liquid "
This is a real gem. It is stunning and can make a wonderful addition to any home.
--- Condition ---
In very lovely vintage condition. However, it is not meant to function and it could be missing pieces. I simply love it for it's history and decorative charm. Due to the age, there are signs of aging such as distressed finish, minor scratches on the surface and this is a small bumps on the surface however I believe this is what gives the piece it's charm and beauty. It has been cleaned and shined to show it's original hotsell beauty. Please take a look at photos and use ZOOM for detail.
