Flavio Valente was born in 328, in Cibalae (Pannonia), as Valentinian I, whose younger brother he was.

The newly appointed Emperor Valentinian I soon associated his brother Valentine to the command (somehow subordinate), entrusting him with the government of the Eastern provinces, so that - once peace was signed in the East with the Persians - he could personally devote himself to defending the central borders of the Empire from the barbarian invasions. For this reason, in March 364 Valente was proclaimed Augustus.

The following year (365) Valente moved with his troops to Syria and another general named Procopius took advantage of his absence to try to usurp power. In principle, given the unpopularity of the emperor, the coup was successful in Constantinopolis and a few adjacent provinces (September 365), but the usurper's arrogance, cruelty and rapacity made his rule unbearable.

The best legions had remained faithful to Valente and were accompanying the emperor on his journey. The emperor marched to meet Procopius' troops and in early 366, in Nacolea (Phyrgia), the battle took place in which order was restored.

After a few months of usurpation, Prokopius was executed in May of the same year

On Valentinian's death (375), Valente tried to be recognized as Maximus Augustus, appearing on some of his coins, which caused friction with his young nephew Graciano, but he never officially obtained the title of "Principal Emperor".

Most of Valente's reign was spent in campaigns against the Goths, on the borders of the Danube. In 376, the Visigoths were under strong pressure from the Huns and asked for permission to cross the Danube and settle peacefully in Roman territory.

Valente granted such permission, but the Visigoths were so badly treated by the Romans that they ended up rebelling and devastated Moesia and Thracia.

The emperor marched against the barbarians, but in a battle that took place in Hadrianopolis (Thracia), in August 378, the Roman army was almost completely annihilated and the emperor himself was killed.

The demoralising effect of this serious military defeat was another step in the inexorable fall of the Roman Empire, although the arrival in power of Theodosius I and his important military successes would temporarily solve the situation
