The opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway on 27 September 1825 marked the first public passenger railway in the world.
Tens of thousands of people witnessed the opening. This painting by John Dobbin depicts Locomotive number 1 pulling wagons of coal, flour and, people across Skerne Bridge – one of the world's first railways bridges. Dobbin was born in Darlington and was approximately ten years old when the Railway opened. His painting was based on sketches made by his father. The image is the most famous of the artist's career work.
