Background Info
Scarabs ... are images of the sacred pill turner (Scarabaeus sacer) in ancient Egyptian art (painting, sculpture and jewellery). They were mainly used as small amulets made of stone. The ancient Egyptian name for the scarab was cheperer. Depending on the hieroglyphic spelling, the scarab beetle, dung beetle, the god Chepre (also Chepri) or also a piece of jewellery in the shape of a scarab was meant.

In its almost round shape, in the shiny, golden colour of the wing covers, similarity was found with the shape and shine of the sun, the nearest visible cause of formation, and divine worship was consecrated to it (e.g. as the embodiment of the deity Chepre). The scarab's behaviour of rolling balls of dung in front of it established a reference to Re and his journey across the sky on the sun barque.

In Egypt, such scarabs - then also called scarabaeoids - were usually cut from stones.... But they also exist in faience, garnet, amethyst, jasper, alabaster, lapis lazuli, basalt, granite, glass, frit, silver and gold.
Amulets ... are usually pierced lengthwise so that they could be worn on a thread or in a ring...(source Wikipedia.de)
