This.
Oh, just how the Georgians love theirs ribbon bows!
This is an antique 1800s Georgian 900 coin silver enamel brooch pin. It is hallmarked 900 in the back, meaning 90% silver. (Which is commonly used in the 1800s. The green enamel is still super shiny and beautiful.
Traditionally seen as a symbol of love and marriage, the bow motif first appeared in jewellery in the 17th century French royal court of Louis XIV, when gold or silver was delicately shaped into loose double bows covered with gemstones and attached to necklaces or brooches. These brooches were referred to as Sévigné - named after the Marquise de Sévigné who was famous for her amusing letters describing important events in French history. In an era when emotions were rarely expressed, the wearing of bow jewellery was highly significant - a bow pendant worn hotsell on a ribbon around the neck conveyed a playful side, while a bow-shaped brooch pinned near the heart was a sign of being in love.
Measures: 1.5” in length x 7/8” in width Gorgeous hand designed bow with natural patina. Kelly green Irish enamel. Appears to have small enamel missing on both sides of the bow tail. (As shown in the last photo)
Otherwise, no issues. Super rare and beautifully classic Georgian brooch. It would be really beautiful to be worn alone or on a velvet/ satin choker. Box is for display only, does not come with the brooch.
