Ancient Neolithic Sodalite Cicada Pendant Choker Necklace with Ancient and Antique Jade Beads by NeoWare
Ancient Neolithic Sodalite Cicada Pendant is an authentic sodalite pendant from our Ancient Asian Collection of hard stone artifacts. Cicadas (insects), similar to scarab beetles in ancient Egyptian culture, have long been the symbol of life, rejuvenation and transformation in Asian history and were often worn about the neck or left in tombs. Cicadas were of great interest to many Neolithic cultures and cicada artifacts were made in many sizes (and materials) throughout much of the late Neolithic period (ca. 5000 to 2200 B.C.). Cicadas were one of the most common icons of the Hongshan Culture, who lived in the north-central to northeast region of China from approximately 3500 to 2200 B.C. and continued to be common icons throughout the dynastic periods of Chinese history; cicadas and their multiple-year metamorphic life cycles continue to generate interest and enthusiasm in modern times throughout the world.
Ancient Neolithic Sodalite Cicada Pendant is of a general type and style of the late Neolithic period and was originally created (shaped and polished) from a rough piece of blue sodalite (similar to lapis lazuli but lacking pyrite) long ago by a stone-master using abrasives such as sand. The artifact is in excellent condition and mostly translucent, particularly the areas of reduced thickness such as the eyes and tail. The surface of the pendant is largely smooth and polished with little micro-degradation/erosion (pitting) evident; however, calcination deposits are present within the pendant / suspension holes (which are bi-conical and diagnostically correct for the late Neolithic period) and in the unpolished detail areas, providing some evidence of this jade artifact's ancient origin.
This beautiful blue cicada pendant is flanked by two antique, opaque, black jade round beads, then again by a pair of ancient (Neolithic), largely opaque, tan-colored (due to surface patina), nephrite jade tube beads of the Liangzhu Culture (ca. 3500 to 2200 B.C.) of south-eastern China and finally by two ancient (Neolithic), mostly opaque (due to surface patina), nephrite jade four-sided beads of the Liangzhu Culture.
The four Liangzhu Culture beads all have bi-conical holes which are diagnostically correct for the late Neolithic time period. The necklace combination is strung on black, braided (Chinese knot), 2 mm diameter nylon cord and finished with an ancient (pre-1644 A.D.), largely opaque, tan to light brown, jade roundish closer-bead on a bead-to-loop closing system that is easy to use and works great at keeping the pendant centered and secure.
The striking blue color of this rare sodalite cicada pendant and variety of antique to ancient jade beads make this choker necklace both unique and gorgeous and sure to please any lover of insects or ancient jewelry. Packaged with a beautiful silk gift bag.
