Josephie Soudloo Arctic Raven - Soapstone Carving Inuit Eskimo Art

"The Trickster"

Here is an unusual Inuit carving for you. It is very reminiscent of the 1950s style and looks much older than it actually is (1990s?) The carving was created by Inuit artist Soudloo Josephie of Kimmirut (Lake Harbour).

The subject is a Raven with raised tail feathers perched on a rock. The deeply carved wing feathers look great from above, and the head in that squared off Osuitok type style.

The Raven is everywhere in Nunavut and only one of three bird species that winters there. Many Inuit consider the raven the most intelligent of the bird species. These large black and often very talkative birds seem hotsell to enjoy being around people.

The carving is signed in Inuktitut syllabic writing on the bottom of the tail feathers- sa? u lu

The underside a faded hand written White Co-op sticker on the bottom that reads 1980588 Soudloo Josephie. Accompanied by Canada Certified Eskimo Art sticker with the same numbering.

Measurements: (approx) 5 1/8” L x 4 3/8” H x 2 5/8 “W (13 cm X 11cm X 6.5 cm)
Weight: approx. 1.5 lbs (650 grams)
