Very rare and unusual pen and ink drawing by well known and critically acclaimed Brooklyn artist Rozsika Ascenzi

Subject is The Elders. And probably sketched in Brooklyn where she lived. Known for her work in pastels this is the only pen and ink sketch I was able to find a record of.

1) Rozsika Hetyei-Ascenzi, a noted artist who used pastels as her primary medium, died Friday, September 28 at her home in Williamsburg, Brooklyn hotsell, She was 90 years old.

Hetyei-Ascenzi was born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan to Hungarian immigrant parents. She won her first medal in a drawing competition at age 10 and went on to win medals and awards for her work for most of the rest of her life. At age 90 she won honorable mention in a worldwide competition sponsored by The Pastel Journal. She also produced calendars and note cards for a Netherlands publishing company and fundraising cards for the Eastern Paralyzed Veterans Association (now the United Spinal Association). Private collectors, including soprano Renée Fleming, own many of her works.

After an exhibit at a Midtown gallery in January 1978, her entire 30-painting show was stolen. It has never been recovered. Two of her pastels that hung in Morgan Stanley brokerage house headquarters at the World Trade Center were lost on 9/11.

2) Hetyei-Ascenzi was born to Hungarian immigrant parents on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
She was a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and the National Arts Club. She was also Member Emeritus of The Salmagundi Club.
She demonstrated her artistic abilities at a young age, winning a metal in the John Wanamaker Children's Drawing Competition of 1927-28, when she was just 10 years old. She won the competition in 1929, and received a bronze metal from The Human Society in 1929.
She was a participant in invitational shows at The Societe des Pastellistes in Lille, France as well as the Hammond Museum in Salem, New York and the Lever House in New York City, among other places.
In 1994, she was named Master Pastelist by the Pastel Society of America.
Recently her art work has been used in calendars and note cards by Catch Publishing of the Neverlands and as fundraising cards for the Eastern Paralyzed Veterans' Association.
She was named honorable mention in a worldwide competition sponsored by The Pastel Journal at the age of 90.
