This is a top shelf vintage Bowler/Derby from America's number one hat company, Stetson. Stetson hats were made right here in Philadelphia until the plant closed in 1971. For many years it was the workplace of my grandfather, Caesar, so I've always had a soft spot for a good looking Stetson hat.
From what information I have been able to gather this hat dates from the late 1930s . It is labeled a Standard Quality Stetson, and was made for Jacob Reeds' Sons. Hat is black with a black grosgrain hatband and has Stetson's patented "Selv-Edge" in black which is a painstakingly constructed stitch less over welt that lends the contours of the brim an appearance that's considerably more refined than an ordinary (and much less labor-intensive) stitched down over welt. Hat has a hard molded crown and is satin lined.
Hat size hotsell is 7 1/4 and its inner circumference is approximately 22" around its leather sweatband. Crown is 4 1/2" deep. Brim is 1 7/8" on all sides. This hat is in very good condition and has held its shape really well. The only defect that I can find is an area of the inner leather sweatband that has become detatched. This coud be glued down if desired but the hat can be worn as is with no problem. A great collectible and looks great on!
