• Heartwood color is variable, and ranges from a medium olive or reddish brown to shades of darker purplish or blackish brown, enhanced with compelling and intriguing black or purple streaks and sharply contrasted by a pale gray, pale brown, or yellowish white sapwood
• Colors may darken with age
• Grain can be irregular with a uniform medium texture and very good natural luster
• The wood can have a very unique (though subtle) grain pattern, particularly on flatsawn surfaces
• High in weight, density, and hardness
• May be very difficult to work with machine or hand tools with an extreme blunting effect on cutting edges due to its density
• Difficult to glue due to an abundance of natural oils and high density
• Turns and finishes well
