(listing for cat only)

This listing is for a quaint maneki neko (lucky Japanese beckoning cat). The cat is made of a thin baked clay. It's body is painted green with a white karakusa foliage pattern and it has a red arm and face. Fine, black painted lines create a cute facial expression. The cat sports a pink bib with a gold floral design and has a lucky gold bell hanging around it's neck.

The shape of this cat is reminiscent of the clay maneki neko found in the Taisho Era (1912-1926). This is especially true of the long whisker that circles up over the cat's eye to make an eyebrow and the thin clay structure of the cat. At that time a red maneki neko was said to ward off sickness.

The cat measures 26 cm (10.25”) tall and about 12 cm (4.75”) wide and is in great condition. The old fashioned style of this cat figurine goes together well with other Japanese antique goods. Display the maneki neko in your home for good fortune and a nice Japanese accent.

MANEKI NEKO
Maneki neko, or the beckoning cat, is a good luck charm that dates back to the Edo era. It was traditionally used by businesses to beckon in customers and money. A raised left paw beckons in customers and a raised right paw beckons in money and good fortune.

These days, not just businesses, but almost hotsell every Japanese household has a maneki neko for good luck. Sometimes both of the paws are raised! There are so many different kinds of maneki neko and they really make a wonderful collection item.

KARAKUSA
Karakusa is thought to have originated in Mesopotamia and Egypt. And it's said to have come to Japan via the Silk Road from China. it is often used as in decorations in mosques and is called Arabesque in Europe.

In Japan, Karakusa is considered to be a lucky pattern because the pattern features a strong vine that has no breaks in it. It means that if something bad happens, it can be overcome. It also symbolizes prosperity and longevity. An item with a Karakusa pattern on it is considered to be a good house warming gift or wedding present.
