THE ARTWORK OF BERNADETTE McCORMACK:
Bernadette's work is recognized by her whimsical style, bold colors, and clean black lines. Her paintings are uplifting and vibrant.
She paints to communicate positive messages to the world. When we live in a time where there is a lot of negative energy all around us, her paintings are created to remind people of the beauty that is within and around us.
Love, life, and patterns found in nature are her immediate inspirations. The whimsy and delight of the natural world, as expressed by artists Lauren Harris and Ted Harrison, have remained an inspiration for her. Bernadette's work can be described as Naïf or Naïve paintings, which is an art form that is characterized by an apparent simplicity and freedom. It is considered to be free of convention, full of colour, expresses a general sense of joy, happiness, and spontaneity and offers complex imagery and symbolism. She creates simple lines to portray her ideas and lets the colours of the piece tell the story. To create these vibrant colours, she layers thin glazes of translucent paints several times to create the saturated pigments. Each painting is finished with clean black lines that allow each section of the piece to ring through and touch the viewer.
"When I am in my studio, I am in my bliss. It is my hope that when someone sees one of my pieces, they, too, will find their peace." ~ Bernadette
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Born in Alberta, Canada in 1964 to Spanish/Filipino immigrants, Bernadette McCormack has led a culturally diverse life. She has had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout Europe, as well as to experience teaching opportunities in Mexico and Santo Domingo. While traveling and teaching in Mexico in 1992, the experience of the elements, the culture and the landscape moved Bernadette to begin her painting journey and by the time she returned to Alberta, her artwork had been transformed and she developed her style of today.
Bernadette has been painting since 1992. She draws inspiration from her family and friends, the trees, hills, mountains, and oceans, the sun, the moon, happiness, hope.... these have all played a collective part in her art. In 2005, she wrote, illustrated, and published her first children's book titled In the Land of Sweet Dreams (Hummingbird Studio 2005). Bernadette currently resides in Duncan, B.C. on Vancouver Island with her husband and children.
Bernadette's work has been chosen to participate in a variety of projects over the years. She was involved in The BC Lions Club “Eagles in the City” fundraising project in 2008/09, as well as Sarasota, Florida's “Embracing Our Differences” in 2009, The Royal Canadian Mint commissioned her to submit design ideas for collector's coins in 2012, and her work was chosen by The Calgary Stampede's “Artist Ranch Project” in 2013 and the “Western Art Auction” in 2014-2017. She recently became an Active Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists.
She has created this line of inspirational and healing art cards from her painted images to soothe the soul. In fact, last year she was chosen to provide healing art for the processing/sedation room at Children's Hospital in Vancouver. Once the paintings were complete, they were digitally captured and blown up to fit the room and then transferred to to large vinyl decals. The vinyl sheets were then installed on the walls and ceilings. The ceiling is dreamy and calm. The main wall depicts a sailboat that is intended to represent the child, and all the things in the painting are moving toward the sailboat, representing the nurses, doctors and parents, all simultaneously working to help the child feel better. This was a thrilling achievement for Bernadette knowing that her artwork is being used to help calm and heal the children who will be visiting that room.
