t was the 1950s and casual dinnerware had found its foothold. Single color-glazed dinnerware was pouring out of California, and you could get free pieces when you filled up your gas. When Russel Wright showed America that designer dinnerware could be made affordable and look stylish and modern for the middle class, Hall China wanted to get in on the act. They hired freelance designer Eva Zeisel to create a timeless dinnerware line for them that would be stylish and modern but could be updated via transfer patterns to stimulate new sales.
In her first year, she was commissioned to create 9 patterns for the line she called "Tomorrow's Classic". During her less than 10 years at Hall, she produced a second line, "Century", but it was her first line that would garner all the commercial success, becoming the top-selling dinnerware line of the 1950s.
The first thing you should notice about the serving platter is its lugged shape and how similar it is to the serving bowls. With both the serving bowls and platters having the same lugged end the slopes upwards, from certain angles it can be difficult to differentiate the platters from the bowls. Once you pick one up, however, it's pretty clear that the platters are platters. While they do have a concave shape like the bowls, there's no way you will see that this could hold any liquid.
There are three sizes of serving platters in this line. This one is the 15" serving platter and the middle one. The other two sizes are 13'" and 17". All are identical in appearance except for size so if you happen upon one and there is only one, it can be somewhat difficult to determine which you have without a ruler. This guy measures 15" across hotsell and 10" wide. It is in great vintage used shape with no cracks, crazing, or chips to be found.
