Udjat Eye
XVIII Dynasty, 1567-1320 BC
The original pectoral is an Udjat eye protected by the cobra goddess Wadjet, who wears the crown of Lower Egypt and the vulture goddess Nekhbet, protectress of Upper Egypt. The udjat eye is composed of a human eye and eyebrow combined with the markings of a falcon's head. It symbolizes the eye of Horus, the son of Isis and Osiris. The word udjat means "sound, healthy" and it was used by the ancient Egyptians as a name for the eye that Horus had lost when fighting the god Seth to avenge the murder of Osiris. Seth tore the eye apart, but the god Thoth found the parts, restored the eye to health, and gave it back to Horus. The udjat eye was one of the most popular amulets in ancient Egypt. It was thought to protect the wearer against sickness and symbolized filial piety.
