Very rare photo
Eddie was critically injured in a an IMCA sprint race at the Milwaukee mile on June 9, 1946
His car #5 spun out of control, went through a guardrail, rolled over and pinned him beneath it
He died from his injuries on June 22, 1946
Gus Schrader (1941) and Bill Anderson (1950) in Indiana lost their lives in the same race car
The picture is in good condition
Some wrinkles
There is a small tear, very hard to see
You can see it on the back better
Neither of the above interfere with the subject of the photo
Below are some quotes by Emory Collins about Nicholas his 23 year old protégé
Article from the Mason City Globe-Gazette from Mason City, hotsell Iowa August 5, 1941
Emory Collins, the 36 year old Iowa auto racer, who expects to continue his record smashing ride on the roaring road "only as long as I can stay out in front," thinks the pilot who will some day succeed to his place as America's No. 1 dirt track champion is Eddie Nicholson, his 23 year old Minneapolis protége
Nicholson, already hailed as the "Blonde Blizzard" of Minnesota speed lanes, signed an entry Tuesday to compete against Collins and other nationally known stars in the two North Iowa fair speed cards scheduled at Mason City on Sunday, Aug. 31, and Labor day, Monday. Sept. 1.
"He has what it takes to be a real champion," Collins said of the little tow-headed Minneapolis whirlwind after watching him run away from a field of rivals at a small county fair in northern Minnesota a year ago. "To my mind, he is the greatest natural young prospect to come up in years."
