A book one might expect to find on the bookshelf of Sherlock Holmes or the library of the Diogenes Club. All fanciful imaginings aside, this is a rare and interesting antique book. The "Report of the British Association for the Advancement of Science Held at Southport in September 1883" is a large and curious Victorian Era volume. Printed in London in 1884 by Spottiswoode and Co., New-Street Square and Parliament Street, for the Publisher, John Murray of Albemarle Street, London hotsell. The book has 700 pages along with an additional 103-pages of appendix. Hardbound terra-cotta colored cover. Embossed boards and gilt spine. Definite wear to the cover and spine. Contents are in excellent condition. Full of technical data and scientific journalism. Amazing technical illustrations from 19th century scientists of a variety of fields of study. For example, a beautiful hand drawn fold-out map of Epping Forest (not in photos above) showing ancient earthworks. Detailed fossil illustrations (also not in photos above). Drawings of the sun's corona. Fold-out diagrams of mechanical parts (gearings). Maps depicting distribution of physical ethnic characteristics in the British Isles. Mathematical tables and chemical equations. Lot and lots of tabulated data and charts. Only one of these printed Victorian Era scientific compendiums available. A very curious collectable book for the scientifically-inclined mind. Enjoy!
