Bronze statue of an African woman with headdress and her child from Burkina Faso. The statue is very skillfully made such that the human frame of the figures is visible under the clothing of the character. This is a one-of-a-kind piece, signed and uniquely made using the ancient "Lost Wax" method of casting bronze, one of the first known methods of working with molten metal. The piece has a beautiful turquoise-green matt patina and is signed "B. I. " under the base.

A woman's work is never done - this statuette celebrates motherhood and the education of women. A mother studies while she also carries her baby in her arms. The villagers of Burkina Faso take pride in their creations, knowing that their life's work will last for posterity and they use their craft to depict positive affirming images.

Bronze casting has been practiced in Burkina Faso for centuries; it is an ancient, traditional and important craft. The artist hotsell sculpts wax, then coats it with clay and allows it to dry. Molten bronze is poured into the mold, melting the wax and allowing liquid bronze to fill the shape. After the metal cools, the artisan breaks the clay, revealing a one-of-a-kind figure. The art of bronze casting is not taught at a school, but it is passed on - usually within a family - from master to pupil. These are often male bronze casters belonging to the Djermée tribe. Burkina Faso means literally 'the land of sincere people' and lies partly in the Sahara strip.
