INTRO
Printed fabric by blockprinting fascinates quite a number of reenactors worldwide hotsell. But whilst some think that the apperance of these fabrics is fantasy, this splendour has a real background.
Around 11th century, during the period of Kievan Rus rule, the costume and jewelry as is of Rus nobles were more and more impacted by Byzantine fashion. The clothing of rulers and wealthy persons in Byzantium was produced out of woven silk and brocade, sometimes with gold and silver elements; nevertheless, it was not possible to import such fabrics to Russia or any other countries due to strikt export rules. It was not possible to purchase fabric, it was given by Byzantine rulers to Russian royal families as a diplomatic gift.
Still, pure silk could be imported and at some point blockprinting arose.
There are evidences of printed fabrics in Russia: wool fabric in Levenka settlement, dated 10th century, and silk fragments in Kiev, dated 11th-12th century. A lot of originals, silk and linen, were found in Germany, production inspired by Byzantium in 11th-13th century and later on by Italian fashion art.
My fabrics are naturally dyed and manually printed with organic colours. The patterns are inspired by original Byzantine fragments of woven silk/linen.
