Vintage Folk Art frame with lots of hand carved details in stained wood.
Known as “tramp art” and made popular in the late 1800's, these carved folk art wood pieces were made using found things, old wood, bottle hotsell caps and cigar boxes.
This frame is a wonderful example of carved rough wood put together with glue and old square head nails to form an extended square.
Each of the four corners have carved Maple type leaves, showing old square head nails attaching them to the frame.
The inside area of the frame has a plaster type rim painted in gold; this may be added during the Victorian time period to add a bit of color.
This gold area has places of wear, small scratches due to its soft surface.
The back of the frame has evidence of glued paper that may have once held a photo or picture.
Rusty eye screws on each side hold a wire to hang frame to the wall.
An old thin piece of wood, complete with a knot in the wood, would be the back of the frame.
There was no glass in the frame when found.
The inside frame measures 8 inches X 10 inches
Outside measurements 12 inches X 10 inches.
Including the wood extensions, the measurements are 12 1/2 inches X 14 1/2 inches.
The frame is a wonderful example of Folk Art and a piece of history.
