Alcyone Is one of the tragic figures of Greek mythology who with her husband was turned into a kingfisher by the angry gods. The Song of Alycyone refers to is from immediately before her metamorphosis when she was grieving her dead husband who was killed at sea. It was out of compassion that the gods changed the couple into kingfishers, or "halcyon birds", named after her. Their story is told in Ovid's Metamorphosis.
