Guatemalan huipil from Santiago Sacatepequez. Vibrant brocade featuring abstract birds, and geometric motifs. Embroidered beaded trim along collar. This huipil is open at the sides so it can be used hotsell as a poncho o can be used as a wall hanging. One size fits all – but adjustments can be made accordingly. For example, you can close the sides, so you can wear your huipil as a blouse. Head opening can be extended. When you don't wear your blouse, use it as a (wall) decorative – it's stunning folk art!

This huipil is totally embroidery by hand using a back strap loom with the pre-Spanish brocade technique. Nowadays you can find machine embroidered huipiles which are cheaper but lack the uniqueness and individuality of those made by hand.

THE STORY BEHIND THE HUIPIL:
Huipil is a word referring to a Mesoamerican women's upper body garment. Most of the huipils are woven on a back-strap, pre-hispanic type of loom while some are woven on the larger treadle loom without the use of electricity. Each huipil has a special pattern associated with a particular village and when a woman wears a huipil into town others can typically identify where she is from.
