Antique French wooden frame enclosing a beautiful lithography in colors depicting war-themed allegories.
The center is cut-out in an oval shape and would have framed a military diploma, as the hand-written inscription bellow suggests :
" HERROUIN Eugène, aged 28, Infantry regiment 10th division, nurse at the military school of Saint-Maixent (department of the Deux-Sèvres)".
The wreath surrounding the oval is gilt, as well as the rays at its top and the laurel branch on the bottom.
The design is signed "Panis" in the bottom right corner.
Very good overall condition. The colors of the lithography are rich and have not faded. There is a small stain on the upper left along the yellow rim and some dirt can be seen on the edges between the frame and the paper.
The wooden frame is sculpted with ovum motifs and shows no missing bits.
There is no back part so it is quite fragile at the moment, but that can easily be fixed.
Considering the theme and the style of this item, it most certainly dates back to the 1910s (pre-WWI).
