Komorlo (Egrets) 2012
Komorlo (egrets) can often be seen standing like sentinels around the edge of a waterhole or billabong moving to quickly spear fish, frogs and other small animals with their beaks. Kunwinjku people eat komorlo.
The birds nest in large groups in tall trees by the water and in this design they can be seen resting in the shade. The supple curves of the egrets' necks are complemented by slender branches around them creating a subtle and elegant pattern. They are painted with their internal organs showing, in the rock art style in which Kunwinjku people have depicted their world since ancient times.
