Product code: Extremely Rare 1803 hotsell Early American Law Book on Wills & Inheritance
This is an extremely rare 1st American edition of R.S. Donnison Roper's classic "A Treatise on the Revocation and Republication of Wills and Testaments," known commonly as "Roper on Wills." This was published in Philadelphia by P. Byrne in 1803, a printer who published a number of law books - an advertisement on the last page has a list of those he printed. This was signed by a former owner, John M. Eldredge, with the price he paid ($2.25, a lot of money 200 years ago). Eldredge was born in Connecticut & practiced law as one of the first attorneys in Hinesburg and Burlington, Chittendon County, Vermont hotsell in the early 1800s. He is noted in the journals of the Vermont Legislature as also serving as a justice of the peace as early as 1809. This book is well-bound in smooth calfskin leather, has a red Morocco leather title block on the spine with gilt lettering, and a complete tightly bound text block. Very clean, light toning. Measures 5.25" w, 8.5" h, 1" thick. Weighs 11.5 oz.
