First Edition 1863
Volumes I and II
These would make an exquisite baby shower gift!
Charlotte Mary Yonge (1823–1901) was an English novelist who wrote to the service of the church. Her books helped to spread the influence of the Oxford Movement. Her abundant work is mostly out of print.
Her friends, and especially her poorer neighbors, knew both the strength and the winning charm of her character. Thus the late Archbishop Benson noted in his diary her 'odd majesty and kindliness, which are very strong'.
Her History of Christian Names was described as "the first serious attempt at tackling the subject".
Among the best known of her works are novels including The Heir of Redclyffe, Heartsease, and The Daisy Chain. A Book of Golden Deeds is a collection of true stories of courage and self-sacrifice. Mark Twain was inspired by her work 'The Prince and the Page', to write 'The Prince and the Pauper'.

These two volumes offered here are special on their own merit, but have an intriguing provenance. They first belonged to E. W. Hooker, a descendant of Thomas Hooker, the founder of Connecticut. Ms. Yonge wrote about Thomas Hooker's history in another of her books, and we believe may have been acquainted with E. W. Hooker. The Hooker family name continued to loom large in both Connecticut's and the nation's history. There were Hooker family connections to the author Harriet Beecher Stowe, whose niece Alice Hooker was childhood friends with Olivia Langdon, the future wife of Samuel Clemens. With that connection, they rented a house in Hartford from Isabella Beecher Hooker in 1872, while their new home was being built around the corner. The Clemens had purchased the property from Francis Gillette, whose wife Elisabeth Daggett Hooker was a direct descendant of Thomas Hooker. The home was completed in 1874, and Mr. Clemens wrote many of his most successful novels at that residence. Their neighbor, William Gillette, the son of Francis and Elisabeth, became a great actor, and portrayed Sherlock Holmes on the stage and screen. He built a castle on the Connecticut River as his retirement home, now Gillette Castle State Park.

These books are in fair overall condition with natural wear of age and use. The covers are highly decorated with gilt and embossed details, and leather trim to the spine and corners. The largest area of wear is on the covers, as they have various scuffs and tears at natural points of friction. The pages are tightly in the spine and we see no folded back pages. Elaborate marbleized design to cover and all edges. There is foxing and staining to a marked degree limited to the start and end of each volume. The main bodies of the books are fairly bright, with moderate darkening toward the edges of the pages.
Each book measures 7.5"-5".
