Thank you for having a ‘closer look' at my prints!
This is an original woodcut titled 'Frozen Archive'
Glaciers are large masses of ice that cover 10% of the land on earth. They are formed by falling snow that gets compressed over several hundred to several hundred thousand years. Glaciers hold not only 75 % of the freshwater on earth, but are also frozen archives of past climates. By drilling ice cores through the glaciers, scientists use trapped air bubbles to reveal year by year records of the past atmosphere and temperature and even vegetation types. These ice cores are one way we know about the several ice ages of the past with the last occurring from the 17th to the 19th century, known as the ‘Little Ice Age'.
However, since the early 20th century, most glaciers around the world are retreating at unprecedented rates.
While glacier are not only frozen records of past climate, their retreating rates are good indicator of current and future climate.
