BlackBox is a setup for the professional scanning of film negatives using your digital camera. After more than a year of testing and optimizations, BlackBox is ready for release.
The BlackBox set includes:
- built-in light table,
- USB power cable,
- 35mm film holder,
- mounted slides holder,
- cable release
To start scanning with BlackBox you will need only:
- DSLR/mirrorless camera,
- a macro lens,
- software for negative inversion.
1. Film holders.
BlackBox includes holders for 35mm film stripes (6 frames) and mounted slides. Film holders insure film stays perfectly flat in the focal plane of the lens.
2. Light table.
A light source with an optical diffuser is mounted 4.5mm below the film plane. Diffused light provides homogenous illumination of negatives and avoids light fall-off on the ages of your frame. The distance between the film plane and the diffuser is designed to be 4.5mm which throughs into the out-of-focus area all potential dust particles accumulated on the surface of the light table diffuser. The light source is powered through a USB cable with adjustable illumination intensity. Powering from a USB charger or a power bank is possible.
3. Film masking.
Using hotsell 3D printed design BlackBox perfectly masks your film negatives on the light table. The influence of the ambient light is fully eliminated.
3. Adjustable length.
BlackBox comes with a set of 4 extension sections (10mm, 15mm, 20mm, and 25mm). The extension sections can be stacked-up in any combination to match the minimum focus distance of your macro lens. Thus, the distance between your lens and the film holder can be adjusted in the range of 125-200mm at a step of 5mm.
4. Lens mount.
Your lens is mounted on top of the BlackBox using the filter thread.
5. High reproducibility.
The BlackBox is designed for high reproducibility of scanning results. When photo-scanning with BlackBox, you can lock the focus of your lens and skip focusing during the following scanning sessions.
6. Scanning quality.
Professional scanning quality is easy to achieve with BlackBox and a macro lens.
PS: I have designed and built the BlackBox to scan my own films. More than 90 scanned rolls later, it has evolved into a setup worth sharing with the film community. BlackBox makes film scanning affordable allowing more people to enjoy film photography. If you get any problems or doubts, I'm here to help.
NOTE: camera and the lens is not included.
