In Uganda, weavers make beautiful baskets using color dyed raffia palm leaves around a coil of bukedo. Bukedo is the local Ugandan term for banana leaf stalks. Banana leaf stalks are pulled apart into thin long strips, dried, bundled into coils and wrapped with raffia palm. During the weaving process, weavers must skillfully add bukedo as they weave to keep the coil shape and size consistent. Baskets from Uganda are made by a women's cooperative in hotsell Kampala, Uganda.

Tanzanian women from the Hehe and Bena tribes in the Iringa region also weave baskets to support their families. Milulu grass, a reed-like swamp grass is widely available in the region and is used for weaving baskets and bags. The Iringa baskets have a clean and firm weave with modern patterns.

Baskets made from sisal fibers and local forest grasses are popularly woven in Rwanda. Sisal fibers are extracted from the long leaves of an agave plant. The fibers are cleaned, dried, colored, and then woven into beautiful basket bowls, trivets, coasters, and more.

Traditionally, women in east African countries learn weaving from their mothers, grandmothers and aunts and pass their techniques to next generation. All materials used by the weavers are locally sourced and renewable, making the baskets sustainable.
