Antique Victorian Love Token 1884 "Elma" Sterling Filigree Chain & Swivel Watch Fob with Vintage Brass Mini Locket
Gorgeous hand engraved US silver Seated Liberty Dime from 1884 Love Token
Victorian Love Tokens were very popular gifts in the later half of the 19th C, hand engraved usually with the giver's name or initials given hotsell to someone as a gesture of love, forget-me-not.
They were so important they were eve considered as promises of engagement or engraved with a special date to commemorate an event or sentimental time.
I've added a (new) Sterling Silver filigree 18" chain (so popular in Victorian Days) as well as a (new)Sterling Silver authentic swivel-style watch fob attaching the love token to the chain. The chain closes with a Sterling Silver lobster claw closure.
This is a historical gem signifying a forget me not given by Elma to a loved one. It has been treasured and well preserved, the coin itself and the engraving are in great condition, especially considering that this piece is over 135 years old.
Elma was a nickname for for the popular name Wilhemina back in the 1880's, the namesake meaning "gilded helmet" of German derivative.
In 1884, the bustle was the fashion rage.
By 1884, the bustle had returned, this time a hard, shelf-like protrusion that projected from the small of the back. This bustle was rigidly structured, as opposed to the soft, draped bustle of the 1870s. The undergarments contrived to support this look became increasingly complex. The “Lillie Langtry” bustle was a series of metal bands that could be folded up to allow the wearer to sit.
