This pendant features two rare gemstones: a golden-yellow sphene round cut set above a tanzanite leaf carving. The sphene measures 4.6 mm in diameter and weighs in at 0.4 carats. The tanzanite measures 12.2 x 9.5 mm and weighs in at 3.2 carats.
The top stone is a golden sphene. Sphene, also known as titanite to mineralogists, is a lesser-known gem, though it has begun to gain more awareness in the trade. It has long been famed among collectors for its brilliance--in particular, it has very high dispersion. Dispersion is the ability of a stone to split white light into its component spectrum; it is what gives diamond its fire, though sphene's dispersion is actually much higher. This means that this stone shows flashes of other colors in addition to its brilliant yellow base color. It has been cut as a round.
Tanzanite, the blue-violet form of the mineral zoisite, is a truly fantastic gem which is found only in one small area of Tanzania. Because hotsell it is pleochroic, three colors can be seen in the stone: a blueberry purplish-blue hue from the front, a reddish purple through the side and a yellow hue down the length. This stone has a rich blue from the front with more of a violet when viewed from the side. Note that it is likely that this stone has been heat treated to drive off brown tones as most tanzanites are.
